I was painfully reminded of how time flies by as I celebrated another birthday this week. Of course, compared to many of you, I am probably fairly young. I won't give away my age, but I will tell you that I was too young to remember the original release of Star Wars in the movie theaters. Well, Star Wars has nothing to do with this newsletter, but I am amazed with the rapid development of the internet and the speeds with which computer users connect to the internet. It wasn't too long ago when 56K modems were the fastest connection out there. Now, a home internet user can purchase high speed connections (Broadband, DSL, cable modem, etc.) for an affordable price. With a high speed connection, you can download large files in a matter of minutes, listen to music without a hitch, play movies, participate in online games, and perform a multitude of other options that at one time were not possible with a dialup connection to the internet. All that said, the majority of internet users today still connect with a dialup connection using their modem and phone line. What kind of connection should you use? Hopefully, you will find the hints below useful if you are wondering whether a high speed internet connection is right for you.
John Saddler ------------------------ A Helping Hand
These are just some of the factors to consider if you are unsure what kind of connection you should have to the internet. Keep in mind that the most important factor is cost. Depending on your locale, you can expect to pay an average of $40-$50 a month for broadband, cable modem, or DSL. There might also be an installation fee involved. If you cannot afford it, then stick with dialup for now. ------------------------ Favorite Freeware - NetMonitor, 793 kb - by Kissco
http://www.modemwizard.com/netmonitor.html This program comes with tons of features even though it is free. I have this program running on my system right now, and it tells me exactly how fast my connection is at this very moment. It can also do a lookup of a website, test download speeds, connect speeds, and more. If you want to find out if you are getting the most out of your internet connection, download this program. ------------------------ Featured Download - GetRight, 2.1 mb - Headlight Software
http://www.getright.com Many of you may already own a copy of GetRight, but for those of you who do not own a copy, this program can be very useful. In a nutshell, GetRight is a download manager. It helps you stay connected during the download process, speeds up the download, and if disconnected, it will resume the download at the point where you were disconnected. This program is especially helpful for those who are using a dial-up connection. Please note that the shareware version of GetRight is bundled with a program called Gator. If you do not want additional software installed beside GetRight, you will need to make sure you choose not to install Gator during the installation of the program.
