Shareware Marketing Guide

If you have written a great program, but you don't know how to market it, then this step-by-step guide is for you. It will show you how to make sure that

  • There is demand for your type of software.
  • Your software is competitive.
  • Internet users can try your software.
  • Internet users know about your software.
  • You've given people incentive to pay for your software.

You will find there are many no-cost strategies you can employ to promote your software and get it on the computers of people most likely to buy it. You will also find many links to useful resources on the Internet.

The cost to use this guide is only $20. It may be the smartest purchase you have ever made. This $20 can buy you a big increase in sales and therefore pay for itself many times over.

Here is an excerpt from the setSystems Shareware Marketing Guide:

Demand for Your Type of Software

If you want to make lots of money selling things to people who live in Alaska, you should choose things that appeal to them, not your average Internet user. For example, selling bathing suits probably won't make you rich.

To sell software on the Internet, you must write software that is targeted toward your typical Internet user. While the Internet is becoming more widely used every day, the typical Internet user is still more likely to have the following characteristics than your average person:

  • uses the Internet regularly
  • is comfortable with computers and the Internet
  • likes and uses new technology

As a result, the best-selling software will generally be related to the Internet in some way. For examples of this type of software, visit Tucows (http://www.tucows.com), a software download site that lists only Internet-related software.

This does not mean that software unrelated to the Internet cannot succeed. In fact, over time, the typical Internet user will look more and more like your typical Internet user. However, to succeed on the Internet today, if your software is not Internet-related, you may need to work harder on the other links.

What can you do? Either write software that is Internet related, or adapt your software to use the Internet in some way that makes the software more desirable to Internet users. A good example of this is a text editor. If you have a simple replacement for Notepad, you can make it Internet-related by making it able to read and write files formatted for the UNIX environment. You could also adapt it to highlight HTML tags with a different color.
